There are two methods for handling extra credit within Canvas:
-
Assigning a Grade Value Greater Than the Points Possible of an Assignment:
This approach involves awarding a score that exceeds the maximum points allocated for an assignment.- This works best with assignments that are not auto-graded (such as quizzes).
- For example, if an assignment is worth 100 points and a student earns 105 points, the additional 5 points are added as extra credit.
-
Using Assignment Groups for Extra Credit:
Organize your course so that regular assignment groups total 100%. Then, add an extra credit group worth an additional percentage.- Assign point values to assignments within the assignment group. Points earned here contribute to the overall grade based on the weight of this group.
- For example, in an extra credit group weighted at 1%, if a student scores 5/10 on one assignment and 0/10 on another (5 out of total 20 points possible), they earn 0.25% in that 1% extra credit group (5/20 * 1% = 0.25%).
